Coconut Oil, Comedogenic Rating

We all love coconut oil, but this seemingly cure-all substance is highly comedogenic. What does the term comedogenic (pron: kämədōˈjenik) mean?  A comedogenic ingredient is a substance that has a high likelihood of clogging the pores, subsequently leading to blemishes and blackheads. Coconut oil is highly moisturizing and may be beneficial against acne, but it is not recommended if you have oily skin.

All carrier oils have a comedogenic rating of 0 to 5 (0 = does not clog pores, 2 = moderately low/fine for most, 5 = not recommended). Surprisingly, coconut oil has a rating of 4, while shea butter and sunflower oil have a rating of 0.

At Accent Apothecary, we use a variety of high-quality, organic,  cold-pressed oils to formulate our products.  We only use coconut oil for our cleansing and exfoliating products:  Noix De Coco soap, Citron Thym bath bombs (shown here) and epsom salt scrubs; while opting for lower-rated comedogenic oils (ex: hemp seed, safflower, sunflower and jojoba) for our skin care products meant for all-day coverage.

Product Spotlight: Noix de Coco Soap

Noix de Coco Soap was inspired by our LOVE of coconut. The recipe contains a mix of organic coconut milk (in place of water), sweet almond oil, rice bran oil, sustainably-harvested palm oil, canola oil, shea butter, and coconut essential oil.

The mix of these oils is essential, because soaps that are ONLY comprised of coconut oil can actually dry the skin. The cleansing properties of this soap are incredible…so much that we also use it for a shampoo! The warm coconut smell from this soap is just another reason to love it.

The shea butter, canola and rice bran oil give this soap a fantastic lather, and its very rich in vitamin E. The sweet almond oil creates a wonderful texture and contributes to the moisturizing properties. The coconut oil is the main driver in the cleansing properties of this soap. The coconut milk in this soap helps with dry skin/scalp. The fatty acids in the coconut milk create a smooth, creamy bar of soap.

Overall, while one of our most recent soaps, this is our personal favorite!

Product Spotlight: Mon Chéri Soap

Oatmeal and honey may be the most popular soap that is crafted by millions of do-it-yourself soap makers. So what makes ours different? We add Vitamin E to ours to help with numerous skin conditions, including eczema, psoriasis, allergic reactions and itching caused by dry skin. We use top-shelf all-natural organic honey, alongside our organic and sustainably harvested oils to create a wonderful smelling bar of soap!

This soap is not edible! We feel funny to have to say that, but at least one of our customers has taken a bite of this soap. We do not recommend that.

Aside from the oatmeal, honey and vitamin E, we also use sweet almond oil in our Mon Chéri recipe, which helps treat dry skin, helps with sun burns, and improves acne!

Overall, our oatmeal honey variation is a great twist on a very popular soap that will leave your skin feeling moisturized, clean and refreshed!

Product Spotlight: Le Calme Soap

Le Calme was our first soap, inspired by the fresh offerings of the Pacific Northwest.  “Calme” is a French word meaning “calm, peace, quiet”.

The way this soap smells and leaves your skin feeling fresh and moisturized is really amazing.  The soap can be used as a full-body shower soap or a facial cleanser. The subtle accents of bergamot, rosemary and lavender create a perfect cleansing aroma to relax and rejuvenate.  Here is a quick summary of the ingredients in this soap and why they work so well together:

Coconut Oil. Coconut oil is a natural cleanser and bubble producer in our soaps. We keep the levels of this oil lower, because its natural cleaning abilities can leave the skin feeling dry. The coconut oil helps balance out this soap and provide a wonderful cleaning effect to the moisturizing.

Canola Oil
Canola oil gives this soap it’s great creamy lather. The oil also is a natural moisturizer.

RSPO Palm Oil and Palm Kernal Flakes. We only use sustainably harvested palm oil and palm oil flakes, and this recipe has both. Both contribute to the lather and hardness of the soap bar.

Bergamot Essential Oil
Bergamot essential oil is a citrus scent with antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. This essential oil is effective for treating acne and sensitive skin.

Dried Lavender
The dried lavender adds a gentle exfoliating element, as well as a natural aroma for relaxation. Lavender can help reduce wrinkles and lessen acne.

Dried Rosemary
Rosemary can help with blemishes and improves complexion. We use dried rosemary and grind it into fine elements to add color, texture and aroma.

Combined, these ingredients create a great healing soap that can help with blemishes, sensitive skin, and provide a natural aromatherapy in your daily routine!

Product Spotlight – Avocate Soap

Our Avocate Soap is our best moisturizing and healing soap. The ingredients are all designed to keep the skin clean and moist, and prevent drying and cracking. Here is why this soap is so amazing:

Avocado Oil. Avocado oil has high levels of fatty acids and softens the soap bar while providing vitamins A, B, D and E.  We only use the finest avocado oil in this soap.

French Green Clay. French green clay is used worldwide for its healing, detoxification and purification properties. It exfoliates and softens the skin, and can help heal acne and other scrapes, blemishes and burns.

Avocado. We use fresh, organic avocado in this soap.  It provides a silky, smooth feel and helps sooth and nourish dry skin.  It is also rich in proteins and nutrients, including vitamin E.

Olive Oil. As always, we use high quality olive oil in our soaps, which provides a great lather and wonderful moisturizing properties, as well as gentle cleansing properties.

RSPO Palm Oil and Palm Kernal Flakes. We use only sustainably harvested palm oil and palm oil flakes, and this recipe has both. Both contribute to the lather and hardness of the soap bar.

Lemongrass Essential Oil. We add lemongrass essential oil for the perfect citrus accent to this soap, which gives it a refreshing, crisp, clean smell.

Poppy Seeds. The poppy seeds we add to this soap for scent and exfoliating properties.

This cold-process all natural and 100% vegan ingredient soap will leave your skin feeling brand new, clean, and healthy. If you have burns, scrapes, or acne, this soap can help heal skin, moisturize dry or peeling skin, and help your pores with all-natural ingredients.
